Design & Build

This laptop is beauty as well as a beast in such a small ‘Clamshell’ form factor with stupendous performance. The laptop has a stylish sleek design with a 4-sided narrow bezel, wide-angle viewing & 300 nits brightness. Lenovo Ideapad S540 has a 13.3 inches QHD display for great colour reproduction.

This 13.3 inches laptop is feather-light at 1.28 Kgs with an anodized Aluminum build, which makes it look super-premium. People do mistake it for a Macbook at the first instance.

The laptop has an inbuilt IR camera, which enables Face Unlock for hands-free login and eye-tracking. This is a cool feature that was earlier available only in smartphones.

Keyboard

The diamond-cut glass touchpad on the Ideapad S540 has great precision & adds to the contemporary design. The backlit keyboard is a boon for people who love working at night without straining your eyes.

The keyboard and touchpad quality on this laptop is superb. The backlit keyboard and glass design touchpad give a unique premium experience.

This laptop features the latest Intel Comet Lake (10th Gen) i5 Processor based on 1.6Ghz base speed and 4.2Ghz max speed, 4 cores, 6Mb Smart Cache. It has a dedicated Nvidia MX 250 mid-range Graphic Card which makes the laptop blazing fast. The mid-range MX 250 graphic card is not suitable for serious gaming but can easily handle tasks like photo and video editing with ease.

The processing is further boosted by the 8GB DDR4 RAM and 512GB ultra-fast PCIE M.2 SSD. The laptop does tend to run hot under heavy usage but the dual fans provided in the laptop handles the heat dissipation properly without any issues of thermal throttling.

Sound

It has two dual speakers with Dolby audio. The speakers are placed at bottom which is suitable when placed on a desk or a table and not suitable while on a lap. So this is a kind of a drawback.

Connectivity Options

The laptop has only two USB Type C and one USB type-A port. There is no HDMI slot, Ethernet port, optical drive, or thunderbolt port which is annoying, though it has one audio-out port and one microphone port.

It features Wifi version 6 and Bluetooth V 5.0. The laptop features a fingerprint scanner for security and an IR camera for face recognization.

Battery

This laptop powered by a 3 cell 56WH lithium polymer battery with rapid charge technology. Lenovo claims a battery life of around 18.5 hours. In real-world conditions, the battery gives around 10 hours of light to moderate usage, which is again excellent.

The rapid charge technology of the laptop lets you charge 80% of the battery in under 1 hour.

5. Apple MacBook Air 2020 10th-Gen Intel Core i3

Apple’s MacBook Air needs no introduction and the MacBook Air 2020 model was a much-awaited upgrade over its predecessor. This is the only Apple model that features in the list of best laptop under 80000 category.

The new MacBook Air 2020 has undergone three major changes :

  • New Magic Keyboard
  • 10th Gen Intel processor
  • 256GB of storage

Design and Build Quality

The Macbook has an aluminum body that makes it feel very sturdy. The body has a matte finish complemented by the mirror finish Apple logo on the lid compared to the backlit logo in the earlier models. The MacBook Air 2020 features a Retina display and has the Intel Core i3 processor in this budget.

The MacBook Air is available in three contemporary and soothing colours – Silver, Rose Gold, and Space Gray. You can choose the colour as per personal taste and liking.

The MacBook Air 2020 has a slightly thicker and heavier design compared to the 2018 design and everything almost remaining the same. The size of the laptop is compact and portable, and it is actually lightweight at 1 Kg 290 gms.

Display

The Macbook features a 13.3-inch IPS Retina display with a resolution of 2560×1600 pixels at 227 pixels per inch with support for millions of colours. The display has narrow bezels which make the laptop look suaver. The Apple True Tone technology enables it to automatically adapt the colour temperature of the display to ambient light.

The display colours looked clear and the colours were saturated as the black levels are greatly improved. The text and icons look so sharp on the Retina display, you need to see it to believe it.

Keyboard

The backlit Magic Keyboard is a big change to its model with the new scissor mechanism and is a welcome change over the problematic butterfly mechanism. The new Magic Keyboard is easy, responsive, and comfortable to use. The keys have 1 mm of travel which makes it very responsive.

The trackpad is 20% larger than its previous variants that give more room for multi-touch gestures. It also has a Force Touch feature for haptic feedback whenever you press any part of it.

The power button is smaller in size compared to its predecessors and also houses Apple’s Touch ID fingerprint sensor for authorization.

Speaker

The MacBook Air 2020 features stereo speakers one on each side of the keyboard that gives 25% more volume and two times more bass as compared to the non-retina MacBook Air model. But in our test, we felt the sound that the stereo speakers were loud and clear but still lacked in punchy bass.

The Macbook features three microphones placed around the laptop for clear voice, and awaking ‘Siri’ for mundane to some important tasks.

Connectivity Options

The MacBook Air 2020 has lesser ports than the 2017 MacBook Air. It has only two Thunderbolt 3 (up to 40 Gbps) Type-C ports, USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10 Gbps), and a headphone jack. This Macbook supports one 6K or up to two 4K external displays through the Type-C ports.

The underlying problem with having just Type-C ports is that you cannot connect some of the most common accessories to the Macbook. You need to buy a separate adapter for connecting most common accessories to your Macbook.

Apple has been very conservative about the connection to other peripherals, maybe that is the reason that transferring between Apple devices is a breeze by using the Airdrop, but with other devices, it’s a pain.

The MacBook Air (2020) also features dual-band Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth 5, a 720p HD webcam, and a 50Wh battery with a claimed 11-hour battery life.

Processor and Performance

This MacBook Air 2020 features a 1.1 GHz dual Core Intel Core i3 10th generation CPU with turbo boost up to 3.2 GHz, with 4MB L3 cache for excellent processing capability.

The laptop also has 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and a 256GB PCIe SSD for fast processing and performance and storage option.

The Macbook also features the Intel Iris Plus Graphics that support Thunderbolt 3–enabled external graphics processors (eGPUs) for better graphics performance. We have tested Adobe Photoshop on the platform and it runs without any issues.

The performance of this laptop is pretty solid throughout without any issues. The only issue was during extensive gaming. The laptop bottom and the above keyboard area got hot, but the keys and palm rest area weren’t affected as much. The cooling of the laptop is handled well for productivity but not for gaming.

Software

The MacBook Air has macOS 10 Catalina, which is upgradeable to macOS 11 Big Sur.

Battery

The Intel Core i3 version of the MacBook Air 2020 can run for up to 11 hours of Web browsing or up to 12 hours of video playback on a single charge as claimed by Apple. While we did not achieve the same numbers, still we got anywhere between eight to nine which is phenomenal by any measure.

The battery is charged by the 30W USB-C Power Adapter and USB-C Charge Cable (2 m) which takes about an hour and half to fully charge it.

Verdict

The Macbook Air 2020 is a very capable laptop for productivity, content creation but not for serious gaming. The compact body, excellent display, efficient processor, magic keyboard, and SSD give this laptop high performance.

The combination of macOS and its integration with iCloud on Apple devices is what makes the Mac experience unique. Though the hardware might not be at par with its Windows rivals, performance-wise it is just amazing. As far as productivity goes, the MacBook Air 2020 is a solid choice for many users.

Pros

  • Thin and lightweight
  • Powerful processor
  • Fantastic display
  • Battery performance
  • Contemporary design
  • Productivity oriented
  • Apple brand value

Cons

  • Ports availability
  • Heating issues

Choosing the Best Laptop: Key Features

  • Display. Size, resolution, and refresh rate are the most important features that can all impact your gaming experience.
  • CPU and GPU. These are the most important pieces of hardware that ensure a powerful performance experience. Check the component specifications like core count and clock speed as the most important specs. You may also like to check different benchmarks for knowing which has a better performance over the other.
  • Memory and storage. You need at least 256 GB SSD for faster performance, fast booting up amongst other key features. Any laptop with SSD and HDD is an added advantage. This not only gives you enough storage but it helps for better and faster performance.
  • Design. You are the best judge to choose between lighter or heavier laptop laptops. Laptops with powerful hardware do weigh more whereas for a traveler a lighter laptop may be much better.
  • Ports and inputs. You should plan for the number of peripherals you are going to attach to your laptop. Be it using external storage, optical drive, or audio. You need more flexibility, more space, or extra high-speed ports, you have to decide before buying the laptop.
